Primary 2 - Miss Black

We read Goldilocks as our fairy tale this week. Just like in the story, we made and tried some porridge of our own. During our topic time, some of the children enjoyed playing with the bears and porridge in the tuff tray. They were able to retell the story and also explore the capacity of the various bowls and spoons. 

Following on from our castles topic last term, we will now be focusing on  Fairy tales as our new literacy topic. This week, we read Jack and the Beanstalk which really captured the children's imagination! We planted our own magic beans and we are eagerly waiting to watch them grow into beanstalks!

During Big Maths this week, the children have been learning to measure surface area. We used counters and gem stones to measure the area of a variety of shapes. We found that the cat shape had the largest surface area with it requiring 179 gem stones!

To help with our money counting skills, the children designed their own shops. Afterwards, we took it in turns to visit each others shops, buying items and using coins to pay with the correct amounts. 

The children worked in groups of 2 to design and build a castle using the sugar cubes! This was lots of fun however it required the children to plan their designs carefully before the building process could begin. We all agreed that the sugar cubes worked well as bricks for our castle walls!

Our new topic in maths this week is fractions. The boys and girls used the play dough to cut shapes into halves. They also worked with a partner to make different pizzas using the toppings. This helped them to practise using the language of halves and wholes.
